Class Actions

Class actions are lawsuits brought by hundreds or even thousands of victims, all of whom are represented by just a few “named” plaintiffs in the suit (sometimes there is just one named plaintiff).  In the typical class action case, the individuals have suffered some harm or economic loss that is identifiable yet too small to bring as a case by itself.  For example, a phone company might overcharge its customers by $2.00 per month over the course of a year.  In that case, the economic loss suffered is only $24.00 ($2.00 X 12 months).  However, if a class of 1000 people have been affected, then the loss becomes $24,000 ($24.00 x 1000).  In a class action case, the combined losses of all class members can be brought into court through the lead plaintiff or plaintiffs.
